The Wild and Wonderful World of Gemstones - All There is to Know about Gemstones and Crystals

By Jenna Vierck

Sparkling, vibrant, and full of energetic healing powers, gemstones are a world of their own. These stones are rare and valuable materials of nature that are mined from the soil. They can be used to produce a number of pieces of jewelry, including necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. Gemstones are well-loved and sought-after around the world, making them  incredibly valuable. However, mining for gemstones requires a significant amount of time, effort, and expertise. These hidden beauties of the world must be discovered and uncovered before they can be worn.

Many people choose to adorn themselves with gemstone jewelry simply because of the stone’s innate beauty. In contrast, others are drawn to gems because of the numerous benefits they are said to provide for one's well-being. Whatever the case, gemstones make for timeless jewelry that is cherished by the world over.

As for their use as energetic healing tools, there may be an explanation for how this came about. Human beings have always been attracted by the thought of a force that is far greater than them; a force that may, in one way or another, ease their suffering during times of adversity, attract good fortune and luck, or simply cure the ills of the human condition. Humans are constantly seeking a connection to divine forces, and black gemstones are said to be one of these powerful forces. If gemstones intrigue you, then follow along to learn the history, geological background, and properties of crystals!

The History of Gemstones

For thousands of years, mankind has been fascinated with the concept of the "self". So much so, in fact, that it is possible our desire to be liked and to feel a sense of belonging is just as important as addressing our basic needs, such as food and shelter. Jewelry has been an ageless means of fitting in, standing out, and expressing one’s unique personality, and therefore boosting the sense of “self”. When it came to accessories, teeth, claws, and horns were among the first things people used to adorn themselves. A common belief among hunters was that wearing their trophies would bring them good fortune on their next hunting expedition, as well as demonstrate their status and identity as hunters.

People have been adorning themselves with jewelry for thousands of years as a way to express themselves and to elevate their appearance. Even the most rudimentary of men took use of whatever resources were available to him and, with the assistance of some skilled craftsmanship, created some amazing pieces of jewelry to display. In many ancient cultures and societies, before humans knew that precious gemstones even existed, they would use the bones of exotic animals to fashion long necklaces and elaborate crowns.

In some cases, people would even wear the bones of their enemies around their necks as a symbol of strength, and to instill fear in the hearts of their opponents. Luckily for us, this trend is a thing of the past, and has been switched out for beautiful gemstone jewelry.

The ancients also adorned themselves with feathers, bones, shells, and colored stones. These colored stones, also known as jewels and gems, have long been revered for their beauty and durability and have been utilized in the creation of jewelry to commemorate important events.

Around the year 1300 in Europe, humans first discovered how to cut the legendary diamond to reveal its brilliance and shine. Their stunning nature has kept them popular and loved ever since. Many forms of jewelry that are still being made today originated as utilitarian items. For example, the use of clasps to hold clothing together gave birth to the creation of pins and brooches. On top of this, rings and pendants were used as early seals and symbols of identity, rank, and authority. Over time these items have evolved in appearance and meaning.

The elite or ruling class in many cultures and societies would customarily adorn themselves in the most extravagant and precious jewels. They did this as a way to not only show off and beautify themselves, but also a means of distinguishing themselves from lower classes. Being adorned in these jewels signified authority over others. To demonstrate the validity of their official status, it was typical for top officials, noble men and women, and other state authorities to wear a specific type of ring.

In most cases, this ring would be made of the finest gold or silver with some form of an official inscription on it, as well as a large, colorful stone. The ring would then be passed down from generation to generation as an ancestral heirloom. Clearly jewelry has been used throughout history for more than just its modern-day use of accessorizing, but rather as symbols of power, authority, and sheer control over others.

As civilization progressed and the world became increasingly fast-paced, a historical event occurred that changed the course of history for humans and gemstones alike. This was a time called industrialization. With the beginning of industrialization, people began uncovering huge and minor sources of some of Earth's most valuable metals and gemstones; ushering in a new era of jewelry making.

The popularity of gemstones grew as more and more people discovered their beauty and value, and scientists began conducting significant research to learn more about the unique features of these stones that were being retrieved from the Earth's core. Also, technology made it conceivable and economically feasible to cut and shape stones and metals to a certain appearance, creating a market for the purchasing and selling of jewelry, whether as a gift for someone special or one's own benefit.

During this period, jewelry items such as rings, bracelets, necklaces, and earrings became more widely available to virtually everyone who could afford to pay the correspondingly high prices. Among the new roll-out of jewelry designs, there were both delicate and statement pieces.

They ranged from minimalistic rings to bold rings adorned with large stones, and from plain neck chains to necklaces featuring large pendants. With its long and winding history, jewelry has come a long way. What was once a symbol of status or an amulet of protection, is nowadays most commonly used as means for self-expression and creativity.

Birthstones and Astral Stones

A birthstone is a gemstone that represents the month and zodiac sign of a person's birth. Each of the 12 months correlates to at least one vibrant gemstone, and each holds its own distinct set of properties. Every birthstone varies in design, historical significance, scarcity, and any special physical or visual characteristics. They all hold something special to share with those who use their powers.

These stones are available in a variety of shapes, colors, and types, and each one is endowed with its own set of benefits. Many of the birthstones are said to have a calming and healing effect on the person who wears the gemstone.

Despite the fact that there has been an increasing shift in the level of higher consciousness in recent years, the number of people familiar with the intricately complex world of gemstones is surprisingly still quite small across the globe. However, as more and more people become aware of the offerings of gemstones, the number of crystal aficionados is increasing day by day.

The importance of "the self" is becoming increasingly apparent, especially in today's fast-paced world. An increasing number of people are realizing the importance of "the self" in making the world a better, more peaceful place to live. They are seeing that every change must start with them. Humans are working on themselves to heal their own emotional wounds first, in an effort to help in healing the more problematic wounds of the world.

As people begin to look for solutions and ways to improve themselves, the quality of their lives and the quality of the world around them begins to improve. They are realizing that these vibrant stones, used throughout centuries, hold the wisdom and power to bring positive change within themselves and the world.

Ancient societies utilized jewelry as a form of amulets to fend against bad luck and illness, and it is still used today. Even today, we hear stories and firsthand accounts of people who, through the use of gemstones and jewelry, were able to attract good luck and financial success. These stories and legends inspire the creation of jewelry that is thought to grant the wearer control over wealth, love, or other areas in need of improvement.

Jewelry also came to symbolize human bonds, love, and commitment. Wedding rings are the ageless example of a couple's commitment to one another and to their relationship. In today’s world everyone wears jewelry - whether it is a wedding ring, a gold watch, or a pair of dazzling earrings. However, it is important to note, that at one point in European history, only the affluent and high-ranking church officials were permitted to wear jewels. This was a sign of wealth and power at the time.

Stones can be kept close to the body by being fashioned into any type of jewelry, which is the most straight-forward way to harness their many benefits. They can be worn as bracelets, rings, pendants on neck chains, or even as earrings. They are a necessary addition to any outfit and will elevate any look.

Additionally, if you are searching for a thoughtful gift to give to a loved one, this is a good time to consider purchasing them a piece of birthstone or gemstone jewelry. Gemstones that are placed directly on the body have a significant vibratory effect, resulting in an energetic transfer of energy from the gemstone to the wearer. By wearing gemstones, we can improve our overall energy and aura.

A very common jewelry item that people like to wear is birthstone or gemstone bracelets, which are usually quite  delicate and minimalistic in design. They can be worn with any outfit, from casual loungewear sets to formal business outfits, and may be worn for any occasion. It is crucial to remember that while gemstone bracelets can be worn for their visual appeal, it is also important to understand that each gemstone has energetic properties that can attract pure, healthy vibrations into our bodies.

Wearing gemstone bracelets on a regular basis has the potential to subtly alter the wearer's life experience. Keep in mind that where you wear the bracelet has an effect on its powers. For instance, the left side of our bodies is sensitive and receptive; therefore wearing bracelets on your left wrist can help you attract positive energies into your being, while wearing bracelets on your right wrist will help boost your intuition.

The Facts and Folklore of Gemstones

Throughout history, people have cherished gems for a variety of reasons. Some use crystals and gems as a way to express themselves and accessorize, others use them as religious symbols, while others use them as protective amulets and good luck charms. Gems have also been utilized as a tool for bartering, as well as for therapeutic purposes throughout history. Some people have even used gemstones as investments in the past. Gems are a timeless manner of demonstrating riches, rank, and power in the eyes of others. In centuries past, only the royalty were owners of the most valuable jewels, and they created extraordinary pieces to demonstrate their high status.

Some of these treasures are still in existence, and their histories are a fascinating blend of historical fact and folklore. Consider the Black Prince's Ruby and the Timur Ruby, to name just two exquisite examples. These two items are housed within the Imperial Crown of the British Crown Jewels.

The history of gemstones is replete with tales of gemstones possessing magical and mystical abilities. Ancient cultures believed that specific stones might protect them against misfortunes, illnesses, and sorrows. Depending on the culture and country, superstitions surrounding the stones will vary and often be contradictory in belief. For example, one type of gemstone, opal, was said to bring ill-luck by some, while others thought it to bring good luck.

Powdered gems were marketed as medicine in Europe during the Middle Ages and even more recently in India, where pharmacists are trained to harness the stones’ healing powers. These medicines are generally consumed with a glass of water or a cup of herbal tea. In ancient times, people believed that the most precious gemstones had the most therapeutic properties. The use of red gemstones was intended to aid in the stopping of bleeding, green ones were said to be good for the eyes for their calming color, and yellow gemstones crystals were thought to cure jaundice.

The number twelve appears frequently in gemological literature. Aaron, the first high priest of the Hebrews, was adorned with twelve gems, each representing one of Israel's twelve tribes. These stones were put in his breastplate, as a means to carry the twelve tribes of Israel with him. On the other hand, the twelve apostles were portrayed by symbolic stones in the Christian tradition.

On top of religion, many mythologies have also been inspired by gemstones. One such example is the highly prized amethyst. It is said that Bacchus, the deity of wine and conviviality, was once enraged as a result of a slight committed against him, and he vowed to exact vengeance. He declared that the first mortal who crossed his path would be devoured by tigers. Just at that moment, the gorgeous maiden, Amethyst, appeared, on her way to the goddess Diana's shrine to offer her prayers and offerings.

After noticing what was going on, Diana converted Amethyst into stone in order to save her from an untimely death. Following his viewing of the miracle, Bacchus expressed regret and poured wine over the stone, which stained it purple. Legends such as these bring personality and greater meaning to the stones. Furthermore, jewels have long been associated with the signs of the zodiac, as well as with the sun, moon, and planets.

Gemology

There are a few important distinguishing traits that determine a stone’s value. The following characteristics are vital: attractiveness, durability, rarity, fashion, and size. The interest in gems stems mostly from a visual appreciation of their radiance and brilliance.

Beauty, without a doubt, is the most crucial attribute that a gem may possess, as no gem will be highly valued if it does not possess this trait. Beautiful color, on the other hand, is mostly determined by its intensity of hues. In appearance, the most appealing colors are those with a pure and vibrant hue, such as red, green, blue, and purple gemstones crystals. Other sought-after colors are orange and yellow.

An understandable necessity for crystals set in jewelry is their capacity to withstand typical wear and tear. Hardness, or the capacity to resist abrasion, and toughness, or the resistance to fracture, are both important factors in determining durability. If a gemstone is to be considered durable, it must be as hard as or harder than quartz, according to a widely accepted rule of thumb. It is also human tendency to treasure the unique, and as a result, the rarity of a diamond is an important factor as well.

It has been shown that the factors of appeal and uniqueness are correlated with ever-changing trends of the fashion world. That which was seen to be desirable yesterday may no longer be so attractive today, and today's standards may be superseded by new ones tomorrow.

When gemstones are produced deep inside the earth's crust, traces of other minerals, known as inclusions, can be found in their composition. A product of the earth, gemstones are a rare and beautiful find. Most precious stones were produced deep below the earth before being transported to the surface by bursts of molten rock.

Diamond and zircon are examples of such gemstones. Numerous other gemstones, such as topaz, tourmaline, and aquamarine, crystallized slowly from heated fluids and gasses, as they cooled and hardened deep inside the earth's crust. Other types of gemstones, like Australian opal, are created when liquids seep into fissures and crevices in the rock.

Some minerals, such as garnet and jade, developed as a result of earth movements heating and pressurizing rocks, which then recombined to produce new and different minerals, such as agate. Most minerals exhibit visible signs of their formation - for example, tiny crystals of other minerals that were caught up in the growth of the larger host crystal, or that formed simultaneously as the host crystal grew, internal fractures that have been partially healed during growth, or traces of earlier growth stages, as indicated by zoning - that can be identified. When it comes to internal phenomena such as these and others, gemmologists refer to them as "inclusions."

By using a microscope or 10x loupe to examine the inclusions in a gemstone, it is possible to uncover information about the geological events that created this material. Gemstone inclusions can occasionally be used to identify gemstones, and they can also be used to determine if a gemstone was created artificially or naturally.

When it comes to gemstones, inclusions can also reveal the origin of the gem. Several gemstones, such as aventurine quartz and star sapphires, rely on the inclusions within them to produce their desired effect. The beautiful green aventurine is actually a form of colorless quartzite that has been filled with small green flakes of fuchsite mica to give it its vibrant green coloration.

Rutile (commonly known as "silk") crystals are aligned in three orientations parallel to the sides of the hexagonal prism to form the interior of star sapphires. Owing to its name, it is possible to perceive a six-pointed star (or sometimes a twelve-pointed star) when this stone is cut into a dome shape.

How are Gemstones Formed?

Traditionally stones are organized between precious stones and semi precious stones. Today's precious stones include emerald, ruby, sapphire, and diamond, with the rest of the gemstones being classified as semi-precious or less precious. This distinction reflects the rarity of the respective stones in ancient times, as well as the quality of the stones themselves.

All stones, with the exception of the colorless diamond, are translucent with fine color in their purest forms, and all are extremely hard, with hardness ranging from 8 to 10 on the Mohs scale. Color, translucency, and hardness are the characteristics that distinguish stones from others.

The historic distinction does not always correspond to contemporary prices; for example, while garnets are very inexpensive, a green garnet known as tsavorite can be significantly more costly than a mid-grade emerald of comparable size and quality. Hardstone is an unscientific term to describe semi precious gemstones that have been used in art history and archeology. It is argued that the terms "precious" and ``semi-precious", in a commercial context, is misleading in that it indicates certain stones are intrinsically more valuable than others, which is not always the case.

Geologists are now responsible for identifying gemstones in modern times. They describe gems and their features using technical terminology that is exclusive to the discipline of gemology. The chemical makeup of a gemstone is the first attribute that a gemologist looks for when identifying it. Diamonds, for example, are composed of carbon (C), whereas rubies are composed of aluminum oxide (Al 2O 3).

Many gems are crystals, and they are classed according to their crystal system, which might be cubic, trigonal, or monoclinic in shape. Another term used is habit, which refers to the shape that the gem is most often found in. Diamonds, for example, which have a cubic crystal structure, are frequently found in the shape of octahedrons.

Gemstones are divided into several categories, including groups, species, and variants. The red variant of the species corundum, for example, is referred to as ruby, but any other color of corundum is referred to as sapphire. Other gemstones that are varieties of the mineral species beryl include the emerald (green), aquamarine (blue), red beryl (red), goshenite (colorless), heliodor (yellow), and morganite (pink). All of these gemstones are varieties of the mineral species beryl.

Gemstones are distinguished by their refractive index, dispersion, specific gravity, hardness, cleavage, fracture, and luster. They may display pleochroism or double refraction, among other characteristics. Their luminescence and absorption spectrum may be distinguishable from that of other materials.

Inclusions are little pieces of material or faults that can be found within a stone. Gemstones can also be classed according to how much "water" they contain. This is a recognized grading system for determining the shine, transparency, or "brilliance" of a gemstone.

The majority of gemstones are formed in the earth's crust, which is around 3 to 25 miles beneath the surface of the planet. Diamond and peridot, two gemstones that are found significantly deeper in the earth, are some of the most common. Diamonds are formed in "kimberlite pipes," which are underground conduits that go from the earth's mantle (more than 125 miles) to the surface. Molten magma flowing through these pipes generally rises to the surface as lava and cools, but if it does not reach the surface. Instead, it cools more slowly, crystallizes, and solidifies into coarse-grained minerals.

Igneous rock is generated by the cooling and crystallization of magma beneath the earth's surface (intrusive or plutonic), but it can also be formed when lava flows at the earth's surface. During the formation of intrusive igneous rock, interlocking crystals build and may eventually crystallize into gemstones, depending on the elements present, the cooling time, and the surrounding environment. The larger the gemstones, the slower the cooling process.

In igneous rock, you can find the quartzes (including amethyst, citrine, and ametrine), the garnets (including moonstone), the diamond, the spinel (including tanzanite), the tourmaline (including Topaz), and the zircon (which is a type of zircon). Pegmatites and hydrothermal veins, which are genetically connected to igneous rocks, are responsible for the formation of several of these jewels. Sedimentary rock is the second type of rock and is responsible for the formation of minerals that have been transported, such as jasper, malachite, opal, and zircon.

Sedimentary rocks are generated when rock is worn down and the fragments are carried away by water or the wind, where they are finally compacted together over time by the pressure of the surrounding environment. The third type of rock, metamorphic rock, is generated when severe subterranean heat or pressure causes existing rocks to change their physical properties. Metamorphic rock is responsible for the formation of gemstones such as beryls (emerald, morganite, and aquamarine), jade, lapis lazuli, turquoise, spinel, ruby, sapphire, and zircon.

Jewelry collection moonstone gemstones

The majority of gemstones are minerals or rocks that exist in favorable locations in the earth's crust or in the gravels that form as a result of the weathering of rock formations. Only a small number of the finely crystallized minerals that appear to be suitable for gemology actually fit the criteria, that is, are sufficiently attractive, durable, rare, and large enough to be cut into stones. Gemstones are extremely rare as a class of natural items.

The planet is made up of around one hundred different chemical elements. It is no surprise that oxygen and silicon are the most abundant elements in the earth's crust, as they occur naturally in the majority of minerals. They are found in significant amounts in gemstones such as amethyst, aquamarine, emerald, garnet, peridot, topaz, tourmaline, and zircon, among others. Oxygen is a key component in gemstones such as ruby, sapphire, chrysoberyl, and spinel. The crystal structure of a mineral is formed when particular atoms attract one other and arrange themselves in an organized geometric arrangement throughout the formation process.

All mineral crystals have their atoms arranged in some combination of fourteen fundamental patterns, all of which are unique to each crystal. Minerals are typically found in the form of crystalline grains in rocks. Because the grains compete with one another for a limited amount of available space, it is rare for entire crystals to form in the absence of competition. Another crucial aspect in crystal formation is the passage of time.

During the rapid cooling of molten rock, natural glass or small crystals can form as a result. Larger crystals have more time to grow when the cooling process is slower. It is possible for large crystals to form whenever the conditions are favorable. They may develop slowly in open cracks or hollows in the rock, which they can then fill with water. Occasionally, crystals that are virtually flawless are discovered.

The internal atomic structure of a mineral determines the particular external crystal shape of the material. The shape of a crystal can often be used to identify and distinguish different gem minerals from one another. Many gems can now be created in laboratories, which is a significant advancement.

Synthetic gemstones have the same chemical composition and physical attributes as gemstones that have developed naturally in the earth. A simulated gem may have the appearance of a natural gem, but that is where the resemblance ends. It is important to remember that material must be visually appealing enough to be utilized for personal adornment in order to be designated a gemstone.

Minerals that have been cut and polished are typically referred to as "cut stones". The fundamental characteristic shared by all gemstones is their aesthetic appeal. Gemstones are also associated with images of perfection, prosperity, and social standing. Rubies, emeralds, and sapphires are some of the most valuable colored gems available.

Besides these gemstones, there are numerous others, including aquamarine, amethyst, garnet, opal, peridot, and turquoise, which can be found in abundance across the world. The cut of the crystal is another thing to take into consideration. A nice cut is something that may not be more expensive, but it can significantly enhance or detract from a crystal’s appearance. The glitter and brilliance of almost any colored stone can be enhanced by a well-executed cutting technique.

When held face-up, a well-cut faceted gemstone reflects light uniformly across its surface area, indicating that it has been properly cut. It is possible that some parts will appear dark if the stone is too deep and narrow. Alternatively, if the stone is too shallow and wide, it will wash out and become dull in places. The easiest technique to determine cut is to compare similar gemstones that are close in size and shape. Primarily, however, if a stone is wonderfully cut, its shape for final attractiveness is determined by the purchaser's perception of the stone's beauty.

After all, a stone's variation is limitless in terms of possible shapes and sizes. Round, oval, cushion, pear, marquise, and heart are just a few of the prevalent cut forms available today. In conclusion, colorful gemstones are extremely diverse in terms of their types, colors, and chemical compositions. The use of both precious and semi precious stones in all types of jewelry, including rings, bracelets, necklaces, and charms, is common among jewelers in order to encourage customers to purchase their products.

Which Countries are Home to Gemstones?

The gems of particular places have built up a reputation for quality and excellence through the years. Rubies from Burma, sapphires from Kashmir, and emeralds from Colombia, for example, are considered by the market to be the most coveted of their kind. Malagasy gemstones are extremely rare in the geological world and are not evenly distributed in crustal rocks, despite geological evidence that these countries can also produce stones of inferior quality and that stones of high quality and very similar characteristics can come from East Africa.

The market's appetite for high-quality stones from traditional sources such as Sri Lanka for sapphires, and Nigeria or Pakistan for emeralds, has not waned in recent years. Indeed, there has been an increase in the demand for certifications that identify the nation of origin of gemstones, and the attachment of one of these to a particular stone can greatly increase its value.

The majority of origin certifications are produced by respected independent gem laboratories, but some stones lack enough distinguishing traits to allow for a definitive classification of their country of origin. This makes the determination of their country of origin a contentious topic. When such a stone is handled with care, it is more likely to emerge with a probable origin. Consequently, in any objective debate about a gem, use of the term "origin" has been discouraged in favor of more descriptive phrases such as geological source or geographic location.

In spite of their overall rarity, certain locations appear to be favored by local concentrations of a number of gem species, whereas others appear to be barren of such concentrations. Most abundant are the extremely old shield sections of the continents, with Brazil, East Africa, South India, and Sri Lanka standing out among the best-endowed of the world's continents. The shield areas are also the locations of kimberlites and gem diamonds, with the richest regions being southern Africa, Siberia, and, more recently, north-western Canada. Kimberlites and gem diamonds are found in abundance in the shield areas.

Besides major fold belts, other preferred locations for gem minerals include the Andes in Colombia, the Urals in Russia, and the Himalayas in Pakistan. There are also the rubies from the Himalayas in Pakistan and Nepal, as well as their extension into Myanmar (formerly known as Burma); and jades from the Rockies in western Canada, the mountainous South Island of New Zealand, as well as Myanmar.

Examples can be found in both shield areas such as Minas Gerais (Brazil) and fold belts such as the Californian Sierra Nevada, and they include a diverse range of gem minerals such as beryl, garnet, kunzite, topaz, and tourmaline. Basaltic rocks are found in abundance throughout New South Wales and Queensland, as well as central Thailand and central Nigeria.

They are often associated with gemstones such as sapphires, zircons, and spinels. They also formed in the peaceful conditions of near-surface groundwaters in other places of Australia, but these were far removed from the mountain construction and volcanic activity that gave rise to the beautiful opal.

Classification of Gemstones

Precious gemstones are distinguishable from semi precious gemstones.  Sapphires, rubies, and emeralds are examples of precious stones. These three gemstones are the only ones that can be referred to as precious. Semi-precious stones include amethyst, aquamarine, citrine, garnet, onyx gemstones, opal, peridot, tanzanite, and topaz, amongst other stones. All jewels, whether precious or semi precious, are of great worth.

Their value is determined by a variety of factors, including color, size, quality, and scarcity. Examples of beryl varieties include emeralds and aquamarines, which are both varieties of this mineral. Although both precious and semi precious gemstones, the emerald is the more valuable of the two. There were several factors that led to this classification, the most important of which was the disparity in value and rarity between the four precious gemstones and the rest of the gemstones.

Some semi precious gemstones are now valued far more than precious stones in today's marketplace. Several natural pearls command extremely high prices, often exceeding the value of a low-quality precious stone such as a diamond, ruby, emerald, or sapphire of comparable quality. Furthermore, many semi-precious stones might be more uncommon than some precious stones, making them a good investment.

Garnets such as demantoid garnets or tsavorite garnets, as well as many other semi precious gemstones, are difficult to come by and even more difficult to mine. They are typically created in lesser quality than precious gemstones. When selecting a gemstone, we recommend not getting too caught up in whether the stone is precious or semi precious in nature. In reality, all gemstones are precious in the sense that they bring unique significance and worth to you in the form of jewelry.

Precious Gemstones

A precious stone's quality, uniqueness, and the beauty of its colors are what separate them from other types of gemstones. There are just four types of highly precious stones: diamonds, sapphires, rubies, and emeralds. As a result, all other stones are referred to as semi precious stones. Moreover, their hardness, which translates into scratch resistance, distinguishes them from the competition. If one stone can scratch another, the former is considered tougher than the latter. A diamond is the only thing that can scratch another diamond. However, it is still susceptible to fissures in the event of a large shock.

Semi-Precious Gemstones

Despite its name, the phrase "semi-precious stones”, does not imply that they are any less lovely than precious stones in terms of aesthetics or value. Amethyst, topaz, peridot, citrine, aquamarine, and green tourmaline are among the most well-known of these gemstones. When it comes to semi-precious stones, there is an unlimited palette of colors and tints to choose from, which is far greater than the total number of colors available in precious stones combined.

The Process of Gemstone Extraction

Diamond mining is a highly mechanized and industrialized process. When it comes to diamond recovery, pit mining is the preferred method. Pit mining entails the use of heavy machinery, hydraulic shovels, and trucks to extract diamonds from kimberlite pipes. Mining for colored gemstones (other than diamonds) is, on the other hand, a very different process.

As the deposits are scarce and, when discovered, characterized by modest quantities of gems dispersed over a considerable volume of rock, the mining for precious colored gemstones is labor-intensive and time-consuming. Because modern mining techniques are of little use in these circumstances, and because the deposits are frequently too tiny to be viable for major mining companies, they are left to small, independent miners who rely on the same manual procedures they have been using for decades.

Nonetheless, several big mining corporations have entered the gemstone industry in recent years, bringing with them innovative ways for implementing contemporary mining practices. Here are some examples of different mining techniques.

Step 1 - Open Cast Mining

Opencast mining is one of the procedures used in the extraction of gemstones. It entails the removal of overlaying minerals or rocks in order to expose the gem-bearing rocks beneath them. The gem-bearing rocks are subsequently washed with high-pressure jets of water, or by traditional methods, to obtain the gem gravels, which are then used in jewelry. At the treatment plants, the gravels are washed and separated into several types. Opencast mining is practiced in various places of the world, including Myanmar, Sri Lanka, the United States of America, and Brazil.

Step 2 - Pit Mining

Pit mining is a word used to describe a mining method in which pits are dug up to a depth of around 12 meters and then filled with ore. Pit mining is usually the first step in the development of open cast mining operations.

Step 3 - Terrace Mining

Terrace mining is the term used to describe a mining practice in which the gem-bearing rocks are exposed by digging horizontal terraces in step-like, typically circular formations. In order to extract the gem gravels, blasting or excavating must be carried out, and then the debris must be cleaned. In Columbia, the Chivor Mine is an outstanding example of terrace mining, with extraordinary emeralds being mined there.

Step 4 - Tunneling

When there is a gem-bearing rock outcrop or a seam of gem-bearing rock that is close to the surface, tunneling technology is used. Mining is carried out by blasting or employing pickaxes to remove individual gem roughage from the surface to the gem-bearing rock beneath the surface. In Colombia, a few emerald mines employ this method of extraction.

Step 5 - Block Caving

In block caving, a series of parallel tunnels known as scraper drifts are driven from the main shaft into the pipe, about 400 to 600 feet below the surface of the mother rock. Block caving is a type of underground mining. Beginning at the top level, entire blocks of blue earth are mined out by blasting through the roof of the tunnels and into the scraper drift, which is a conical draw point in the ground. This is then taken to the main shaft, where it is subsequently brought to the surface of the earth.

Step 6 - Chambering

Initially, a major vertical shaft is dug into the rock surrounding the pipe in the process of chambering. Tunnels are drilled into the pipe from the main shaft at predetermined levels of 600, 1000, and 1600 feet in length and diameter. Blasting is used to recover the ore, which is subsequently carried to the main shaft and finally to the surface.

Until a seam has been depleted, the levels are worked on. When the diamond deposit is a pipe deposit, block caving and chambering are regularly employed techniques in diamond mining. In general, block caving techniques are virtually totally mechanical, with all operations taking place on a single level of the excavation. In comparison to chambering processes, this results in larger yields as well as improved levels of safety and efficiency.

Step 7 - Dry Diggings

In this sort of mining, a river's path has either been altered naturally or has been altered artificially. By intentionally obstructing the river at both ends and constructing a canal to divert the water, this can be accomplished. Regardless of the method used, the rock bed must be allowed to dry before the gravel can be sieved to obtain the gem rough.

Step 8 - Wet Diggings

The gravel is collected from the flowing river and then sieved to separate the gem rough from the rest of the gravel in wet diggings.

Step 9 - Undersea or Marine Mining

This sort of mining is employed anywhere there are marine deposits to extract minerals from. These can be on the beach, such as the Namaqualand diamond deposits in West Africa, or they can be off-shore, such as the diamond deposits in the South African desert. This sort of mining may entail land reclamation or even deep-sea dredging, depending on the circumstances.

It is necessary to mention the organic gem ingredients as well as the method by which they are obtained. In addition to pit mining, amber and jet are also fished out of the water, as can be seen in the Baltic Sea, where they are retrieved. Divers harvest corals by using specialized equipment to extract them from the water and transport them to shore. Divers harvest pearl-bearing mollusks from the seabed in order to recover the pearls they have found.

Why Are Gemstones Considered Rare Treasures?

Jewelry created from gemstones can be worn as a statement piece or as a decorative ode to your overall personality. Gemstones are magnificent natural creations that come from the earth. They are extremely valuable for the following reasons: the mining of gemstones takes a great deal of time, effort, and knowledge, more and more natural gemstones are getting increasingly scarce as time progresses, and natural gemstones are becoming increasingly difficult to come by as the cost of mining increases.

When it comes to the grading of all gemstones, there is a great deal of information to consider. First and foremost, the color of the stone will play a significant role in deciding the grade of the stone. When it comes to color, the saturation, the hue, the tint, the tone, the grade, the clarity, the brilliance, and a number of other elements are important to consider.

Color is made up of various components. Other factors considered in the appraisal of each gemstone include the price per carat, the size of the gemstone, the presence or absence of faults inside the stone, and whether or not the gemstone was mined or created artificially.

Gemstones were developed hundreds, thousands, and maybe millions of years ago, which means that the gemstones that are currently available are likely to be the only ones we will be able to obtain throughout our lifetime. Many mines throughout the world are deserted because we have depleted the supply of gemstones that are now available for mining.

Many gemstones can be created outside of Mother Nature's gemstone mines; however, these gemstones are not nearly as valuable as natural gemstones found in the earth's crust. Unfortunately, it costs gemstone miners a lot of money to accomplish their jobs, and the cost of mining continues to rise as the supply of natural gemstones becomes increasingly limited.

In order to uncover these natural jewels, miners must delve deeper and deeper below the earth's surface, a process that takes years. As a result, the value of diamonds will continue to rise as time goes on, resulting in an increase in overall wealth. The greater the rarity of the stone, the greater the likelihood that its value will continue to rise.

Opals, jade, colored diamonds, star rubies and star sapphires, cat's eye stones, topaz, emeralds, rubies, sapphires, tanzanite, and a variety of other gemstones are among the more valuable and unusual stones available. As these are uncommon jewels, they are worth a little bit more than ordinary gemstones. The greater the size of the stone, the greater the value of the stone as well.

How to Choose a Gemstone

The first thing to consider when making a gemstone purchase is budget. The next step is to narrow down your choices. Depending on how you intend to wear your gemstone, there are a variety of approaches you can take to determine which gemstones are best for you and your needs. For instance, when wearing a gemstone necklace, the gemstone will not be subjected to much "wear and tear", as it will not be coming into much contact with hard surfaces or with other gemstones.

The same may be said about gemstone stud earrings. A ring or bracelet, on the other hand, will come into contact with a variety of surfaces, some of which will cause harm to the gemstone it is set in. The hardness of a gem's surface should be seven or above on the Mohs scale when picking one to be worn on the hand or the wrist.

The harder a mineral is, the better it will hold up to daily wear and tear, which is especially important if the stone is to be worn as a ring or bracelet. Semi-precious gemstones with a Mohs hardness of seven or above include all kinds of quartz, such as amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, and prasiolite, as well as topaz and other colored gemstones. Rubies, sapphires, and diamonds are examples of precious jewels with a rating of seven or above.

The use of numerology and gemology can also assist in selecting the most appropriate gemstone for you. It is thought that the hue and unique vibrations of gemstones and minerals have the ability to increase the energy of those who wear them. When the energy of gemstones is amplified by numerical vibrations, the energy of the gemstones tends to become stronger.

It is for this exact reason that some people choose gemstones based on their date of birth. Use your intuition when choosing stones. Try touching a few and holding them in your hands to feel the specific energy it provides to you. See which one really speaks to you and lights up your spirit!
